Celebrating Juneteenth: A Journey of Freedom and Resilience

At Nubian Skin, we honor representation, history, and the beauty of shared experiences. As Juneteenth approaches, we reflect on this significant day and its special place in our hearts.

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom. This delay highlights the long and challenging journey towards freedom for many African Americans.

The History Behind Juneteenth

The story of Juneteenth begins in the Civil War era. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation, enforcement varied, and freedom for all enslaved people was slow to come. Major General Gordon Granger's arrival in Galveston with Union troops on June 19, 1865, finally brought the news of liberation. General Order No. 3 announced the end of slavery, sparking jubilation and symbolizing a significant step towards equality.

Why Do We Celebrate Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, community, and cultural heritage. It is a time to reflect on ancestral sacrifices, honor legacies, and celebrate African American culture and contributions. Festivities include parades, gatherings, and educational events, fostering joy and awareness of Juneteenth's historical significance.
