Differences in Fuller-Bust Bras

Differences in Fuller-Bust Bras

There are quite often visible differences between our smaller and bigger size bras. The reason for this being that a fuller bust is heavier and therefore requires added features to ensure the bra fits comfortably and offers enough support.

These often include:

  • Wider strapping | allow better distribution of weight on the shoulders.
  • Thicker/sturdier wires | give a more supported and rounded shape to a fuller-bust.
  • More fabric layers | If you have a stretch fabric cup fabric density makes sturdier fabric, and therefore more support in the fabric. You can also line the stretch fabric with a rigid fabric to give a better lift. This is often used in wired bras.
  • Different cup construction | the division of pattern pieces in a cup can determine where the bust sits in the cup. Lots of fuller-bust bras will have a side sling panel which helps to lift up and inwards, to create a more centrally supported bust.
  • Added seams | seams are rigid, so if you have a stretch fabric cup, adding seams into the cup can create more rigidity, and therefore a higher level of support.
  • Wider Hook & Eye Fastenings | the fastening width will dictate how deep the back wing is, and this plays a huge role in how much the bra supports you, as 80% of support comes from the under band.

A lot of things can help with support, and these added features can often be frustrating to a lot of fuller-bust women because of course, all women would love to be able to wear the dainty and delicate lingerie.

Adding more structural details to smaller sizes would make these bras very uncomfortable to wear, because where you don’t need the same level of support, they will make for a very rigid/structured bra, on a bust that doesn’t have the weight to be able to distribute the rigidity in the correct areas, like a fuller-bust does.

The same applies to bigger sizes, in that if you use the exact same features as the smaller sizes, then you will have an unsupported bust, as your underwire would splay if not strong enough, you won’t get the same rounded shape your bust needs if there isn’t enough support/rigidity in the cup, and you will get straps that dig in if they are too narrow. The weight of the bust simply can’t be comfortably held by these minimal features alone.

We try and make our fuller-bust bras as similar to our smaller bras as possible, design wise, or at least give an alternative style in the same range & fabric. So that we can be size inclusive in our lingerie, to the best of our ability.
